Unit Solider - Doctor Who Workbench

Though the Doctor advocates peaceful solutions it is (not) surprising how often episodes see major battles or conflict. One of the main forces that supports the Doctor and usually gets in the way is UNIT.

One of the things I always liked about the classic Doctor Who was that UNIT was part of the United Nations, the United Nations Intelligence Taskforc. It seemed more real as a result. You could almost expect that such a taskforce actually existed. The UNIT soliders wore light brown berets and uniforms.

Of course in the new series, the real UN got a little bit snooty and serious and said that the BBC could no longer call UNIT the United Nations Intelligence Taskforce, but changed it to UNified Intelligence Taskforce! These UNIT soldiers now wear black uniforms and have red berets.

Back in the 1990s Harlequin Miniatures produced a licensed range of 28mm metal miniatures (these are now available from Black Tree Designs) and I bought back then a fair few blisters. One of these was the UNIT soldier.

I think that this was one of the weaker castings from the range. I think if I do go for a unit of UNIT soldiers that I might go with some other models instead. I am thinking that the Bolt Action British Paratroopers might be useful, though as you might expect none of them are armed with the L1A1 SLR.

Might need to find some modern 28mm paratroopers instead.

More soon.
