How do I mirror my iPad using AirPlay and an AppleTV?

Apple have made three generations of Apple TV.

The first generation contained a hard drive and worked in a similar manner to an iPod.

The second generation was smaller, had no internal storage (that could be used) and worked by streaming content either from a Mac on your home network or from the cloud.

The third generation was similar to the second generation, but could stream 1080p content.
