Target Acquisition

In order to fire upon a target, the firing submarine must acquire a target. A firing solution must be locked and loaded into the submarine's weapon computer.

It requires one command point to acquire a target.

Acquistion of a target depends on the sonar that the submarine is equipped with. Most sonar equipment will have a 90º detection arc, though there is some sonar equipment with 180º or 270º, and a few with trailing sonar even have 360º arcs of detection.

Active Sonar

Passive Sonar

Maintaining Acquistion

If a submarine was acquired in a previous turn, the attacking submarine must maintain a sonar lock on the target submarine. If the target submarine has moved out of sonar arc then acquistion is lost.

Maintaing acquistion does not require the use of command points.

Blue-Green Lasers cannot be used to acquire a new target, but are vital for maintaining contact with an acquired target. The Blue-Green Laser works in a similar manner to the infra-red targeting lasers that surface weapons use. The advantage of using Blue-Green Lasers is that they allow a similar effect to Active Sonar without the disadvantage of being acquired by an enemy submarine.

Trailing Sonar allows a submarine to detect targets behind her.

In order to acquire a submarine, the attacking submarine must roll under the modified Sonar Acqusition Score. Acquistion allows an attacking submarine to follow the target submarine. An attacking submarine may acquire more than one target, if the number of command points allow it.
